For my 32th birthday which was on the 25th of August Melanie organized a wine tasting sailboat adventure down the coast of Maine.
We stayed one night in Baltimore, went out to dinner with a good friend, had a drink with another. Thank you again Amber for watching over the kitties while we were away.
We flew into Portland, ME then bussed to Rockland. We stayed in a very cute and comfy b&b for the night and then boarded our vessel.
The boat was the historic Stephen Taber schooner. It is 115ft. in length (68 ft. on deck) with a 22 1/2 ft. beam. In other words, it was big. They claim that it is the oldest functioning sailing vessel in U.S. waters. There were seven total crew members. We, along with around twenty other passengers, embarked on our journey the next morning.
The crew consisted of a gourmet cook (Kara, who also helped sail, and played a mean fiddle), a cook's assistant (Allison, also helped sail), two main crew members (Dave and Sephrona(sp.?)), asst. crew member (Will, who was mature beyond his years), and the captain (Cpt. Noah - pretty good guitar player as well) and his wife (Jane, who also led all of the wine tastings).
They were all helpful and friendly and did their intensley physical, mentally demanding, and sometimes gross jobs with amazing kindness and patience.
We also made some friends on the trip. I hope everyone made it home safe.
